03.03.00.1 - Assessment for Course Placement Procedure

​​Part 1. Course Placement Assessment

The Chancellor shall select the system-endorsed placement instrument for assessment of reading comprehension, written English and mathematics according to Minnesota State Procedure 3.3.1 Course Placement. College applicants are required to take the course placement assessment after applying to the College and before declaring a program major, unless they qualify for a waiver. A student shall not be charged a fee for the initial system-endorsed placement instrument. The College may charge a fee to students who request a retest.

Subpart B. Implementation of system minimum course placement scores. The following course placements based on Accuplacer subtest scores indicate that a student is ready for introductory college-level courses. A student who obtains the minimum score or higher shall be placed in the corresponding college-level course(s).

  1. Reading.
    1. College-level Reading: A student who scores 78 or higher on the Reading Comprehension test shall be placed in courses that designate college-level reading skills as a prerequisite.
    2. Developmental Reading: A student who scores below 78 on the Reading Comprehension test shall be placed in developmental reading courses.
  2. Writing
    1. College-level Writing: A student who scores 78 or higher on the Reading Comprehension test shall be placed in college-level writing courses.
    2. Developmental Writing: A student who scores below 78 on the Reading Comprehension test shall be placed in developmental writing courses.
  3. Mathematics.
    1. College Algebra: Placement into College Algebra shall be based on two test scores. A student must score 76 or higher on the Elementary Algebra Test and also must score 50 or higher on the College Level Mathematics test. A student attaining the minimum scores shall be placed in College Algebra.
    2. Developmental Math: A student who scores below a 50 on the College Math test shall be placed in developmental math courses.

      Both scores are required. A student attaining the minimum scores or higher on both subtests shall be placed in College Algebra.

Part 2. Waiver

Waivers of all or part of placement testing are available through the college-initiated transcript review process or a request for waiver review with the submission of an official or unofficial transcript containing previous college coursework. Waivers based on successful completion of previous college-level coursework do not expire.

  1. 1. With appropriate documentation, waivers may be given for:
    1. Reading:
      1. Transfer Credits: Transfer students who have completed a minimum of 6 college level credits in reading intensive classes with a grade of C- or higher from any regionally accredited college or university.
      2. Accuplacer: Reading Comprehension assessment scores of 78 or higher taken on the system-endorsed instrument at any college or university within three calendar years.
      3. ACT Reading: ACT sub-scores of 21 or higher in Reading taken within five calendar years.
      4. SAT Reading: Reading and Writing (ERW) subject area test score of 480 or higher taken within five calendar years.
      5. MCAs Reading: MCA Reading assessment score of 1047 or higher taken within five calendar years.
    2. ​English:
      1. ​Transfer Credits: Transfer students who have completed a college-level English composition course with a grade of C- or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
      2. Accuplacer: Reading Comprehension assessment scores of 78 or higher taken on the system-endorsed instrument at any college or university within three calendar years.
      3. ACT English: ACT sub-scores of 18 or higher in English taken within five calendar years.
      4. SAT Writing: Reading and Writing (ERW) subject area test score of 480 or higher taken within five calendar years.
    3. ​Mathematics:
      1. ​Transfer Credits: Transfer students who have completed a college-level algebra or higher course with a grade of C- or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
      2. Accuplacer: Elementary Algebra assessment score of 76 or higher taken within the last two calendar years and a College Math assessment score
      3. ACT Math: ACT sub-scores of 22 or higher in math taken within two calendar years.
      4. SAT Mathematics: Mathematics subject area test score of 530 or higher taken within five calendar years shall be placed in College Algebra.
      5. MCAs taken within five years:
        1. ​College-Algebra: a MCA Mathematics assessment score of 1158 or higher.
        2. Statistics: a MCA Mathematics assessment score of 1148 or higher.
        3. Liberal Arts Mathematics: a MCA Mathematics assessment score of 1150 or higher.

Transfer students with developmental coursework in math, English and/or Reading will have developmental coursework evaluated by Student Services staff for the possibility of equivalent course placement and waivers. Other courses may be considered upon appeal to the academic dean.
